The DIY Hustle

Exfoliation Decoded

Does your skin feels exhausted, flaky, little patchy and dry??? Think it’s time to Rejuvenate your skin through EXFOLIATION.

Exfoliation is the most critical step in cleansing. It’s  the process of removing dead(keratinized)  skin cells from the outermost layer of your skin(the epidermis) leaving your skin super smooth and radiant. Since epidermis suffers more direct, frequent encounters with the harsh external environment than any other tissue in our body, its repair and renewal are central to its organization.

                                                         Cross-section of skin layers.

The outer layers of the epidermis are replaced a thousand times over in the course of a human lifetime and As we age, our skin renewal slows down, u may be surprised to know how the cell turnover takes place in

  • Babies:  an approx. of 14 Days for skin renewal/cell turnover
  • Teenagers: 21-28 Days
  • Adults: 28-42 Days
  • Older: anywhere from 42-84 Days

This slowing of skin renewal can result in a dull complexion, rough skin tone, discoloration, appearance of signs of aging.

So how exfoliation helps?? You may ask!! Exfoliation removes the dead skin which in turn triggers cell renewal in the lower layers of your skin. So that is why exfoliation is the most critical step in your beauty routine.

Guidelines before you start:

  • Don’t do it every day – since the skin renewal rate for a teenager and an adult is between 21-48 days, you need to make sure that you don’t overdo it. Once in fifteen days will just do fine. Give your skin the time to heal gal.
  • Pick your scrub carefully- A lot of products are available in the market, so choose wisely, go through the constituents then select the exfoliant according to your skin type.
  • Do not over exfoliate- Be careful with over-exfoliation as u do not want the protective barrier removed which will leave your skin exposed to toxins, not to say the harmful UV rays which can do some serious damage.

Benefits of exfoliation:

  • Improves the texture of skin  making it radiant and smooth
  • Stimulates the production of collagen which is responsible for your skin elasticity.
  • Increases cell renewal
  • Opens and cleans clogged pores resulting in the reduction of the appearance of large pores.
  • It reduces chances of acne formation by cleaning your blocked pores and allowing the skin to breathe.

P.S- Will cover up all the natural scrubs for you in the next post.

Stay tuned. heart
